Every so often, you witness something in nature that seems truly unique.
We were camping in the Greater Sudbury Area where lakes are free from cottages, the lakes are clear and you can see 20 feet or more to the bottom.
We had set out on a day trip and did a couple portages before settling onto a campsite near the end of a long lake.
It was a beautiful spot. A spit of land jutting into the lake creating a small lagoon to the back of the campsite, while the front of the site provided a great view of the entire lake and some jumping rocks. Rapids emptied into the lagoon and their sounds painted the air with relaxation.
For most of the day, it was sunny. We lit a fire to keep the bugs away and spent our time swimming, lying in the sun and reading.
But then the weather started acting funny. Odd looking clouds formed; suggesting rain. But odd in that we had a mix of clear sky and dark pregnant clouds.
We decided to pack up and head back to our base camp.
Back on the water, we were treated to a brief sun shower. And then we saw a rainbow! But unlike the typical rainbow that we've all seen before, this one seemed to be a very small arc; as if we were enclosed in a dome. For a moment, there was a double rainbow.
And then! We noticed that we could actually see the ENDS of the rainbow!
Naturally, we paddled over to each end of the rainbow and got out of our canoe to have a good look around! But, somehow we missed out on the pot of gold. But, we tried. Oh Lord, we tried...best that we could.
It was an amazing sight, and a fun side adventure. And philosophically I reasoned that maybe it was not about a literal pot of gold but a figurative one; that the riches are the experience. The connection with God. The beauty of the vision. And someone to share it all with. The happy life be these, and no physical riches could compare.
I'm still likely to buy a lottery ticket when we get home... especially if I see a scratch ticket called "Pot of Gold".
